PROJECT OVERVIEW

In May 2023, I was part of a project that focused on the redesign of an online platform that was supposed to bring together people who want to act and help local and global social initiatives.

The  team consisted of volunteers, young people from all over the world who created this wonderful idea and were looking for someone who would create a redesign of their website. I joined the Impactropia team because I think this idea has incredible potential.

The aim of the project was to improve usability and transparency throughout the platform. Making the user navigate the platform faster and more efficiently.

THE METHOD

Double Diamond

During this project, I was guided by the principle of The Double Diamond Process Model which emphasizes the importance of both divergent and convergent thinking in the design process. It acknowledges that effective design requires exploration and experimentation (divergent thinking) as well as focus and decision-making (convergent thinking). By following this structured approach, I could systematically tackle complex design challenges while keeping the needs of users at the forefront of their decision-making process.

Understanding the problem

What is the nature of the problem?
What strategies can we employ to improve the presentation of the platform brand in order to effectively communicate its value proposition?

I conducted research interviews with our users to uncover any issues they were experiencing with the current version of the platform.

My research included:

  • Understanding user goals and needs
  • Discovering problems with the existing user journey
  • Determining the success of measured tasks.

Structuring Concepts via Affinity Mapping

Which problem can we impact the most? 

Following the analysis of the research data, I sorted the insights into four spectrums to facilitate idea generation.

Impactopia is The Global Impact Platform connecting initiatives and donors in one place. However, its current user experience lacks clarity, causing confusion among visitors. This lack of clarity significantly hampers user engagement, consequently resulting in low retention rates on the website.

DEVELOP

User Journey

One of the biggest problems of the platform that users pointed out was that they were lost in the content, so I decided to create a User Journey map with the team again to see what the user flow should look like. In this project, a very important part was to understand what the founders wanted to show and propose a clear solution that meets the user’s needs and includes all functions and options.

Improving User Experience

Artistic Guidance

Following initial user testing and a user review of the wireframes, feedback underscored two critical areas: simplifying content and adopting a narrative theme. Our aim is to ensure clarity with concise language, emphasize infographics for thematic impact, and cultivate an immersive art gallery ambiance to encourage user engagement.

I wanted to divide the help areas into colors that became the leitmotif of the entire website. A subdued and simple layout design combined with expressive colors that immediately guide the user to a given issue, increasing involvement and interest.
